Top Ten Greatest Myths About Orlando

1. It's just for kids.
Maybe at the Magic Kingdom, but the OTHER Orlando has plenty of appeal for the adult in us all. From the intense thrill rides at Busch Gardens Tampa and SeaWorld, to the natural beauty and quiet splendor of Cypress Gardens, to the vibrant night life of Church Street Station. While you're in Orlando, you can even strap yourself into a jet fighter trainer and fight it out with the Red Baron. And that's not kids' stuff!

2. It's a great place to go if you want your mind to rot.
Orlando has a vital and growing theater scene, everything from Shakespeare to improvisational comedy. There's the Southern Ballet Theater and the Orlando Opera. There are several world-class art museums, including the world's largest collection of Tiffany glass and the renowned Cornell Museum at Rollins College, cited by travel guru Arthur Frommer as one of the top ten free attractions in the world. And they're all covered in depth in The Other Orlando.

3. It's so-o-o plastic!
Just minutes away from the tourist glitz and glitter is the "real" Florida - unspoiled hideaways where you can hike in splendid isolation, or bathe in the crystal waters of a natural spring, or canoe down primeval streams past herons and alligators in a setting that has changed little since the first settlers reached Florida. Or seek refuge in one of the Orlando area's resplendent man-made garden paradises. The Other Orlando can point you in the right direction.

4. Orlando is a one-mouse town.
Of course there's only one Mickey. And we all love him dearly. But it's possible to spend months in the Orlando area, stay busy every day and long into the night, and never once go near the Magic Kingdom - or Universal Studios for that matter. From major theme parks, to smashing nighttime entertainment, to offbeat attractions, to wild animals, to some of the world's most entertaining miniature golf, to world-class art - Orlando has it all and The Other Orlando is your indispensable guide to the world outside the kingdom.

5. I've already seen Orlando.
If you've done Disney and Universal, you ain't seen nothing yet. Orlando offers a cornucopia of splendid sights, awesome entertainment, and hands-on enjoyment. It's possible to come to Orlando year after year and never see or do the same thing twice. Let The Other Orlando show you how.

6. All you do is stand in line.
Only if you want to. Orlando offers scores of attractions that are off the beaten track and still undiscovered. And there are dozens of activities for the active vacationer - from go karts to skydiving, from paintball battles to bungee jumping. If you want to get out of line and into the action, The Other Orlando can show you how.

7. It's nothing but theme parks.
Au contraire, mon frere! Orlando boasts what is perhaps the world's greatest concentration of dinner attractions, where you can be entertained by 50 magnificent horses and their amazing riders, watch American Gladiators battle for their honor, solve a murder mystery that takes place before your very eyes, or be transported to Prohibition-era Chicago, a Polynesian isle, or the magical realms of Arabia- and get fed too! The Other Orlando is the only guidebook with complete reviews of them all.

8. It's too far from the beach.
Orlando boasts two major water parks (the ones that inspired Disney!). There's another in nearby Tampa. And just minutes away is one of the loveliest natural swimmin' holes in Florida, if not the entire world. The Other Orlando helps you get in the swim of things.

9. Orlando's going to be mobbed.
Sure, it's going to be shoulder to shoulder at the Magic Kingdom and Islands of Adventure. That makes this the perfect time to discover the OTHER Orlando. Let The Other Orlando show you how.

10. There's nothing new to discover in Orlando.
Oh, come now! We know you can find plenty of new things to see and do just be looking around. New sights and attractions open so often even native Orlandoans have a hard time keeping up. What people are saying about
The Other Orlando
[ Note: These reviews refer to an earlier edition with a different title.
The current edition does not cover Universal Studios.]

The Other Orlando

Yes, there is more to Orlando than Walt Disney World. For 480 pages of detail on the subject, pick up a copy of Kelly Monaghan's "Orlando's Other Theme Parks : What To Do When You've Done Disney."

The guide covers all of the other commonly known attractions -- Universal Studios, Sea World, Cypress Gardens, Busch Gardens and the Kennedy Space Center -- as well as many lesser known places. These include Gatorland and Splendid China (both with recommendations for a half-day visit), and Church Street Station, a revamped corner of downtown Orlando.

Other topics include water parks, roadside attractions, things to do, gardens, museums and more.

They run the gamut from haunted houses to Trainland, which has one of the largest G-gauge train layouts in the world, occupying 3,200 square feet of space. If you're a train buff and you like the layout so much you just have to have it, Trainland will reproduce it on your premises for a mere $125,000, the guide says.

It's the kind of information that keeps you turning the pages. Published by The Intrepid Traveler and available for $14.95.

``Orlando's Other Theme Parks.'' By Kelly Monaghan. The Intrepid Traveler. 474 pages. $14.95.

There are lots of books on how to ``do Disney.'' But few focus on Orlando's ``other theme parks,'' as this one does. It gives the big picture on Universal Studios, Sea World, Cypress Gardens and other attractions in the Orlando area. It also gives quick facts on a vast number of places to see, things to do and sites that shouldn't be missed. Readers planning a getaway to Orlando likely will learn something from Monaghan's book. It might even tempt those who tend to visit the same old haunts to give a new place a try.

The Other Orlando

Those who believe that Orlando is a one-mouse town should be dissuaded by this 480-page book.
Along with detailed descriptions of what to expect at such parks as Sea World, Universal Studios, Gatorland, Cypress Gardens, and Kennedy Space Center, the book examines Orlando's expanding smorgasbord of themed dinner attractions. In addition, one chapter is devoted to Central Florida's natural attractions.
Travel Weekly

You've been to Disney World and -- incredibly -- still have time to visit other attractions in the Orlando, Fla., area. Or perhaps you're skipping Disney this time around. Either way, a handy book to have is "Orlando's Other Theme Parks: What To Do When You've Done Disney" by Kelly Monaghan. He covers Universal Studios Florida (which has great rides and is growing all the time), Sea World, Cypress Gardens, Gatorland, Splendid China, Church Street Station, Cypress Island, the Kennedy Space Center, Busch Gardens Tampa, water parks, dinner attractions, roadside attractions, zoos. Space is also devoted to the "real Florida" of wilderness and canoe trails.

Had enough of Disney World yet still not ready to leave Orlando? Check out "Orlando's Other Theme Parks: What to do When You've Done Disney" by Kelly Monaghan (Intrepid Traveler; $14.95). What's that? You didn't know Orlando had any other theme parks? Well, there's Universal Studios with its more intense, scarier and "adult"-themed rides. There's also Sea World, Cypress Gardens and Busch Gardens in Tampa.

For those who want to stay closer to Orlando proper, there's always plenty of unusual dinner attractions, such as Capone's Dinner & Show, Medieval Times, Sleuths Mystery Show & Dinner and Wild Bill's Wild West Dinner Extravaganza.

Chicago Tribune
