The roof of the ancient Jokhang Temple in Lhasa

"In the sanctum sanctorum, the lamps burned continuously, while the faithful poured yak butter and vanaspati to keep the flames burning. Buddhas and bodhisattvas sat unpreturbed in the midst of the bustle. An old couple sat in the doorway to a bolted and chained door, chatting away while the dogs played by their feet. Sheep were tied by the covered well. The temple was teeming with people cutting queues and hurrying along to see their deities before the temple doors closed for the day."
