The beginning of the desert, near Lhatse. Sand has been blown onto a hillside along the Tsangpo River.

"From Lhatse we began our journey once more, heading west, broadly following the Tsangpo Valley upriver. Everywhere, the valley had signs of human settlement marked by people, small hamlets, roads, cultivation and small orchards. Beyond the valley, as far as our eyes went, there were barren rocks. Soon, the golden yellow mustard fields in the valley were replaced by barley. Trees lining the roads were fewer, with less foliage, and the groves were smaller. Freshly painted two-storeyed houses gave way to single-storyed huts with dirty and peeling paint on their walls."
