The beach terraces of the Rakas Tal form an ever-expanding amphitheatre.

"The only motorable road that approaches Rakas Tal is from the southeast, the same road that connects to Purang at the border with Nepal. There was no one else other than our small group at the lake. There was nothing eerie about the emptiness. It was the most perfect sight of a mountain lake with two large islands in it. A gravelly fan indicated that water had drained into the lake from the southeast. I counted twelve levels of raised beaches, some formed of large pebble, some coarse sand, some fine sand and some small round pebbles."
