"The Jokhang Temple was as magnetic as it always had been. The charm and attraction of Jokhang lay in its incomparable atmosphere made up of the central ancient living temple, the profoundly religious pilgrims and the noisy activity of trade in the surrounding bazaar. The courtyards hummed with the droning of the monks reciting prayers. Lines of people walked along the nangkor, the inner circular path within the temple, touching one hundred and eight brass prayer wheels. Many sat on the stones in the courtyard and near the doorways, moving fingers over the prayer beads on the rosary, while their lips repeated prayers."
