Paris Will Leave You ... Breathless

Scenes from Godard films highlighted in Paris Movie Walks

Branford, Conn. – Connoisseurs of films by Jean-Luc Godard are reminded that it’s been 50 years since Breathless was released.

Starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, the iconic film tells the story of a petty thief who kills a policeman and carries on with an American girl, while attempting to evade capture. The film was remade in 1983 with Richard Gere and Valérie Kaprisky and Las Vegas as a backdrop.

Breathless or A bout de souffle, of course, is set in Paris and Godard fans can still trace the steps of Belmondo and Seberg through various walking tours found in the book Paris Movie Walks by Michael Shürmann.

Paris Movie Walks features other Godard films: Band of Outsiders (Bande à part), Pierrot le fou, and Alphaville, along with Six in Paris (Paris vu par) in which Godard directed one segment.

Paris Movie Walks takes film buffs on 10 guided tours through the city. The walks cover locations from more than 160 films with Paris connections, giving walkers the opportunity to view the city’s landmarks through fresh eyes. Breathless is included in Walk 2 (Marais to Mouffle), Walk 3 (Park Monceau to the Elycée Palace), and Walk 6 (St-Germain to Montparnasse).

According to author Schürmann, changes in how the city is depicted in film have been quite dramatic over the course of even one decade.

“Early representations of Paris in Hollywood movies basically took their cue from theatrical convention. There was a change in style to more realistic representations in the fifties, enabled by technological progress and accelerated by commercial pressures,” says Shürmann. Godard filmed Breathless using jump cuts and a hand-held camera style that influenced later directors.

Available as a 280-page trade paperback with 64 black-and-white photos and 21 maps, Paris Movie Walks is published by the Intrepid Traveler. It is available at http://www.intrepidtraveler.com/store/travel-books.html, through Amazon and at local bookstores.

The book was selected as a finalist in the Travel Guide category for ForeWord Reviews’ 2009 Book of the Year Awards.
