Author Outlines Changing Face of Cinematic Paris, Feb. 10

American Library in Paris hosts Michael Schürmann, Paris film expert

(Paris, France) - Paris has long drawn filmmakers from around the globe – but the images they have given us of the City of Light over the years vary widely. Michael Schürmann will examine these shifts in focus at the American Library in Paris on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, at 19h30 (7:30 pm).

Schürmann is the author of Paris Movie Walks, an innovative guide to Paris that takes the reader on ten tours through the streets of Paris searching for film locations rather than the traditional sights. Movie buffs can seek out scenes from classic films such as Gigi and Charade to current titles including Ocean’s Twelve, The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Ultimatum.

In the talk, which will be accompanied by images of Paris, Schürmann tracks the diverse career of that most glamorous of movie stars – Paris. According to Schürmann, changes in how the city is depicted can be quite dramatic over the course of even one decade.

“Early representations of Paris in Hollywood movies basically took their cue from theatrical convention. There was a change in style to more realistic representations in the fifties, enabled by technological progress and accelerated by commercial pressures,” the author explains.

The talk will also touch on cultural differences in cinematic depictions of Paris. Schürmann points out, for example, that Montmartre is the most popular location for Hollywood but is almost completely ignored by French filmmakers. Reasons for this will be explored in the lecture.

The American Library is located at 10, rue du Général Camou in the 7th arrondissement. The event is free but space is limited, so arriving early is recommended. For more information, call +33 (0) 1 53 59 12 60.
