Ridgway Charms DISBoard Guests on Disney Cruise

Disney legend shares the stage with Imagineer Bob Gurr.

Charles Ridgway, author of Spinning Disney’s World, shared his memories of working with Walt Disney as one of the guests aboard Podcast Cruise 2.0 with Disney Cruise Line.

Ridgway, along with Imagineer Bob Gurr, design developer of attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and singer Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel in the Little Mermaid movie, regaled nearly 700 DISboard guests and DIS Unplugged Podcast crew during the four-day cruise to the Bahamas in December.

Ridgway and Gurr each told their stories about working with Walt Disney then they were paired together for questions and answers from the audience afterward. The two legends competed to see who could recall the most humorous or off-beat tales of Walt, describing their leader’s frequent inspection tours of Disneyland like Father Goose leading his flock of aides through the park.

Ridgway also shared with the audience his personal collection of photographs dating back to before the opening of Disneyland when he was a reporter for the Los Angeles Mirror News. The photos included one of Walt on the Disneyland fire engine with Mickey Mouse, the last ever taken of Disney.

David Parfitt, the senior correspondent for DIS and DIS Unplugged, considers the event “ incredible … one of the highlights of the cruise.”

A book signing aboard the ship was also a hit, says Parfitt. Fans have praised Spinning Disney’s World as a unique, very informal and personal view of the world that Disney created.

Ridgway, a Disney press agent for 40 years, headed up public relations for the company’s parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. He described his memories and the creative ways he marketed Disney in Spinning Disney’s World, published by The Intrepid Traveler ($24.95). Since his retirement, he travels the globe as a travel writer and photographer.

“Perhaps the most extraordinary thing about Walt,” Ridgway said, "Is that 44 years after his death, his reputation and influence on Disney films and park is as strong as ever. Not Edison, Ford or any other genius of the past has had a more lasting effect on America’s culture.”
