Disney Legend To Speak at Disney Fan Conclave, September 28 & 29, 2007

Charles Ridgway Will Share Rare Archival Photos of Epcot’s Hectic Early Days

(ORLANDO, FL September 4, 2007)  Charles Ridgway, an official ‘Disney Legend’ and the author of “Spinning Disney’s World: Memories of a Magic Kingdom Press Agent,” will make a special appearance at the National Fantasy Fan Club (NFFC) Convention on September 29, 2007, at the Walt Disney World Resort®.

Ridgway will present an illustrated talk on the opening days of WDW’s Epcot park, celebrating its 25th anniversary on October 1. Charlie, as he is almost universally known, was in charge of Disney press relations during that era and supervised what was at the time one of the most logistically complex media events ever, rivaling the Olympic Games in scope and media attention.

On the park’s opening day, the Today Show broadcast live from Epcot, while the other two morning shows had live reports from the site, including extensive segments with Joan Lunden. In the month that followed, celebrities swarmed to Florida to experience the new park, including a seven-year-old Drew Barrymore, fresh from her screen debut in E.T.

Ridgway oversaw the introduction of live satellite uplinks to distant home stations during this event. So new was the technology, that many reporters didn’t realize that satellite dishes were needed of receive the transmissions and some stations had to scramble to borrow equipment to participate. For many Americans, this was their first look at love, remote television coverage, a commonplace occurrence today.

Ridgway will speak at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, September 28, at the Living Seas VIP Lounge in Epcot, and again at12:00 noon on Saturday, September 29, at the Coronado Springs Convention Center. He will be showing rare archival photographs that document the star-studded early days of Epcot.
