Hassle-Free Walt Disney World Vacation

Sit Back and Enjoy the Ride
in Walt Disney World

A Self-Confessed "Disney Nut" Tells All

(ORLANDO, FL) Taking the family to Walt Disney World can be a hassle. Gas prices are up but the roads are still clogged. Airfares have soared, but with fewer flights planes are packed. And let’s not even talk about airport security. When you’re balancing in the security line with one shoe on and one shoe off it can be hard to remember you’re on vacation. When you finally reach Mickey’s realm, those endless lines are a real buzz-kill.

Steven M. Barrett, an emergency room physician and self-proclaimed “Disney Nut” feels your pain. “On a boat ride from the Magic Kingdom to Fort Wilderness, a man uttered a complaint that I’ve often heard at WDW,” Barrett recalls. “’This is supposed to be a vacation? I’ve been here five days, and I’m more tired than when I left home. I don’t feel like I’ve had a vacation at all!’” Barrett, who knows Walt Disney World like the back of his hand thanks to two decades of weekly visits to the “Happiest Place on Earth”®, is convinced it doesn’t have to be like that. “Anything more than 20 minutes in line is too long,” he insists.

So he vowed to help the thousands of Walt Disney World visitors who become overwhelmed with its many splendors and experience misery and meltdown. Dr. Barrett turned his scientific training to the challenge of designing the most efficient touring plans possible for a variety of visitors — adults and teens, families with little ones, and seniors.

The result is The Hassle-Free Walt Disney World Vacation (The Intrepid Traveler, $15.95). Barrett’s guidebook creates a variety of systematic, flexible, easy ways to maneuver through each park. Barrett uses his inside knowledge of touring patterns and crowd psychology to keep you where the crowds aren’t.

For example, Barrett counsels against visiting a park on a day when it opens early for resort guests — unless you’re one of them — since it will be jammed by the time you arrive. He even tells you how to dig up this valuable intelligence.

The guide also includes a rating system for rides, tips on getting the best value for your dining dollar, and offbeat suggestions like bringing along a fat pen, which those costumed Disney characters find easier to handle when giving autographs. Barrett also directs you to the least crowded restrooms, a crucial advantage when the kids are doing the “gotta-go dance.”

Barrett, who admits to being a wee bit obsessive when it comes to WDW, is constantly - more - refining his touring plans and updates the guide annually. The new 2009 edition (the eighth) weaves new rides and attractions like the wildly popular Toy Story Midway Mania into the touring plans and adds information about character meals, which give your kids a chance to dine with their Disney TV and movie favorites. A Photo Quiz, a perennial favorite among Disney buffs, is back with new photos to test your knowledge of Walt Disney World geography.
