AROUND IRELAND BY B&B
|
The food was ample and delicious. Since this was our first stop, we all gorged on the sumptuous Irish breakfast, although a number of less calorific choices were also on offer.
The house is down a suburban street, a short distance from the main road into Ennis from Shannon airport and only a short drive from Shannon itself. This makes it an excellent first stop in Ireland, especially if you plan to head north through County Clare to Connemara and Galway.
Just across the street is a small petrol station with a Quickee-Mart style shop. It was a nice convenience for morning papers (which were a must for our traveling companion), evening snacks, and soft drinks for the road.
Ennis is an internationally known center for traditional Irish music, another good reason to start here. Our hosts were able to point us in the right direction on this score and we enjoyed an evening of Irish jigs and reels, complete with impromptu step dancing by a long-legged lass in the audience.
Ennis is also a good stepping off point for an exploration of the Cliffs of Moher (pictured above) and the Burren, a wonderfully primordial patch of stony wilderness a short drive to the north.
When we left Killmoon House, we turned right out of the driveway and were pointed straight (via the scenic route) to the ferry across the Shannon estuary to County Limerick,
