AROUND IRELAND BY B&B
|
Dunlavin is a small but genteel village that boasts a lovely old market hall (above) and a nearby golf course, which is reputed to have a very nice restaurant.
Tynte House is a large establishment which, in addition to its B&B rooms, has a number of stone self-catering cottages in the attached mews. Guests in the cottages can opt for B&B, so the dining room was quite large, excompassing areas that had once been a grocery store and a saloon.
We expected Dunlavin to be a backwater, but the self-catering cottages were filled with European holiday-goers and there is apparently plenty to do in the surrounding area. In addition to the golf course, there is horseback riding and Glendalough, with its beautiful walks and splendid archeaological sites, is just a 30-minute drive away through the Wicklow Gap.
Our meal at Burke's Pub was hearty if not exactly memorable. Best of all was the ambience. I couldn't help noticing that Dunlavin seems to have more than its fair share of beautiful women, an observation that was seconded by our host. "Sure we have people bringin' 'em back here, you know," he said with a twinkle.
Tynte House also boasts one of the spiffier B&B web sites.
